In the 21st-century Near East, the conflict of values and ideologies is paramount, often overshadowing the clash of interests among major global powers. Consequently, history frequently becomes the arena for contemporary political disputes. Antagonistic geopolitical forces call upon historical arguments to defend their positions. Politics rooted in historical memory assumes a critical role in forming national self-consciousness within contemporary states on either side of the conflict.

No nation and no people can grow by keeping to itself. States, which are established to safeguard national interests, are in constant rivalry; various economic and military-political alliances are formed and subsequently dissolved. Our state, located in the northeast of the Armenian Highland, faces existential threats. To counter these threats and preserve our distinct national statehood and identity, we must have an intimate knowledge of the history of the countries neighbouring the Republic of Armenia. Therefore, there is a pressing need for specialists knowledgeable in the history and culture of neighbouring states and peoples. These experts can employ their expertise to advance political, economic, and cultural relations with those neighbouring countries, all in the service of our Homeland’s interests. The author contends that the present manual will make a small contribution to this endeavour.

The manual covers all the major events in the history and culture of the countries bordering the Republic of Armenia. Its goal is to provide an accurate assessment of these events, and it includes self-check questions at the end of each chapter. Studying this material will help develop a thorough understanding of Armenia's history.

The textbook is intended for a broad reading audience, particularly those with a passion for history.
